US export controls are some of the most complex and stringent in the world. The US Government regulates the transfer of US origin goods and technical data throughout the world, with the intent of preventing unauthorised transfer of technology and know-how. These controls extend worldwide and can impact anyone dealing in US controlled goods or technology.
In the US, punishments as high as US $78 million have been handed out to US companies. These punishments are not just a slap on the wrist, they can seriously impact a US export business and their customers and even include jail time. Even if a business is only being investigated for a potential ITAR violation, the State Department can shut down the operation, preventing the shipment of products.
